Using Bright Light Therapy to Boost Weight Loss and Exercise
Over the past 20 years, countless numbers of people are experiencing a better quality of life as a result of using bright light therapy. Its proven ability to improve mood, energy and help control cravings for carbohydrates and sweets are critical components for helping maintain the motivation necessary for a successful exercise and weight loss program. Especially during the winter and early spring months, when sunlight is reduced and the colder weather promotes a more sedentary lifestyle.
Now, the benefits are even greater: Adding bright light therapy to exercise actually increases its benefit. In a study titled, The Effect of Exercise and Light on Mood, published by the National Public Health Institute1, 98 adults exercised 2-3 times a week for an eight-week period. A baseline of participant’s mood, propensity to increased appetite and weight gain was created at the beginning of the study and taken again upon its completion. Participants that exercised with bright light were exposed to 2,500 LUX of light while those exercising without exposure worked out under normal gym illumination. After eight weeks, the study showed a 45% improvement in test scores for participants exposed to bright light while exercising, compared to a 22% improvement for those who exercised without it.
In another study published in the journal, Obesity2, 25 overweight and obese subjects were assigned to 6 weeks of moderate exercise with and without bright light treatment for 30 minutes, three times a week. Body weight decreased significantly with exercise in both treatment groups. However, body fat decreased only in the group assigned to exercise with bright light treatment from 41.4% to 39.2%. Mood scores significantly improved with exercise in the bright light group as well.
Studies have also found that the production of lactic acid is lower when bright light therapy is added to exercise. The discomfort from lactic acid build-up in muscles can significantly limit exercise performance, as it can contribute to feelings of aches and pains during and after exercise. Adding bright light therapy while exercising may help reduce these unpleasant side effects, thereby increasing an individual’s chances of success with their exercise regimen.
